Meet Bluey
Bluey is a European Lobster (Homarus gammarus), one of Cornwall’s most iconic underwater residents.
Despite being one of the most recognisable animals in British waters, lobsters spend much of their lives hidden away beneath ledges, inside crevices and tucked in little rocky holes. I spotted Bluey tucked in a small rock cave, as the brilliant blue shell was almost shining against the reds of the rock and seaweeds surrounding it.
While many people associate lobsters with restaurants and fishing boats, encountering one in the wild is a very different experience. They are cautious, intelligent and surprisingly curious animals that have survived in our seas for millions of years.

SeaWild Fact
Lobsters are naturally dark blue. During courtship, the female often visits the male’s den, where she remains while her new shell hardens after moulting. It’s one of the ocean’s fascinating mating rituals.
