Meet Moon & Stars
Stars the Spiny Starfish (Marthasterias glacialis) and Moon the Edible Sea Urchin (Echinus esculentus) live amongst one of Cornwall’s most colourful underwater neighbourhoods near Porth Kerris.
This pair shone out about 3m above me and my mind immediately went to the night sky. Stars almost neon turquoise arms stood out against the reef like a star suspended in a galaxy of colour, while a full Moon hung below.
The longer I looked, the more life seemed to appear. Kelp, seaweeds, sponges and countless other marine organisms covered every surface, creating a thriving underwater community.
Reefs like this are the true foundations of life on our planet. Many of the ocean’s greatest wonders are it's small silent residents.
