Meet Tom Daley
This Tom Daley is a Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), one of Cornwall’s most skilled diving birds.
Most people spot cormorants bobbing around on the sea surface or on harbour walls and cliff sides with their wings spread out wide to dry. What many people don’t realise is that they are exceptional divers, capable of pursuing fish underwater using powerful feet and remarkable agility.
Tom Daley literally photo bombed Alex and I at 7m depth as he dived down in front of us, turned, swam several meters and then darted to the surface at incredible speed.
Moments like this remind me that the boundary between land, sea and sky is often a human perception ignored by wildlife and some of the ocean’s most fascinating residents don’t live entirely underwater at all.

SeaWild Fact
Unlike most seabirds, cormorants do not have fully waterproof feathers. This allows them to dive more efficiently by reducing buoyancy, but it also means they must regularly dry their wings after a plunge.
